Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Peer-to-peer learning is a form of education where individuals with similar learning goals or challenges engage in mutual teaching and knowledge sharing. In recent years, social media platforms have emerged as powerful tools for enhancing peer-to-peer learning, offering easy access to educational resources, collaborative tools, and virtual communities. In Pankshin Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp have gained popularity among students, educators, and local community members as means for exchanging knowledge and learning from one another. This study explores the role of social media in strengthening peer-to-peer learning in Pankshin, examining how digital platforms facilitate knowledge sharing, skill development, and collective problem-solving within the local community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although peer-to-peer learning has been shown to enhance knowledge retention, critical thinking, and self-directed learning, its potential is often underutilized in rural areas due to limited access to formal educational resources and structured learning environments. In Pankshin LGA, social media holds significant potential to overcome these barriers by fostering virtual learning communities where individuals can share experiences, resources, and ideas. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research on how effectively social media is being used for peer-to-peer learning in the area. This study seeks to examine the role of social media in enhancing peer-to-peer learning in Pankshin and identify both the opportunities and challenges that come with its adoption.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into how social media can be leveraged to strengthen peer-to-peer learning in Pankshin LGA. It will offer recommendations for educators, policymakers, and community leaders on how to effectively utilize social media to promote collaborative learning and knowledge sharing in rural communities.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the role of social media in peer-to-peer learning in Pankshin LGA, Plateau State. It does not examine formal educational systems or the use of social media in other contexts outside of peer-to-peer learning.
